Potential Things is the debut recording from Toronto creative jazz quintet Canaille. Canaille (pronounced "k'NAI") was formed by reedman and composer Jeremy Strachan in 2008, as a forum to test out his own compositions, tunes, and arrangements with a set group of skilled improvisers. The group consists of players well known to denizens of Toronto's marginal music scenes: Colin Fisher, tenor sax; Mike Smith, bass; Nick Buligan, trumpet; and Dan Gaucher, drums. This record contains 11 out-jazz tunes, which put group interplay, humour, and mordant musical wit above concerns of intensity or aggression. Featuring top shelf playing, improvisational virtuosity, and fearless leaps into collective musical confusion, Potential Things is equal parts John Zorn, Willie Bobo, and half of Sun Ra's arkestra jamming on Waiting for Benny Jeremy Strachan has been making creative music on the margins of Canada's independent scenes since 1999. As the bass player in fabled post-hardcore trio Rockets Red Glare, and later Three Gut Records' Sea Snakes, he toured Canada and the US. He has done session work on dozens of records by acclaimed Canadian artists (Laura Barrett, The Constantines, Golden Dogs, Fembots, Nathan Lawr, The Hylozoists, etc), improvised with Canada's most respected experimental musicians, and has collaborated with visual artist Katie Bond Pretti on The Heart of the Matter (2007). He currently co-leads the avant jazz duo Feuermusik, nominated for the 2007 SOCAN Echo Prize, and is pursuing doctoral studies in musicology.
