Ghedalia Tazartes fans will rejoice for what "Check Point Charlie" is: an hour of archived material available on vinyl for the first time. The rest of the world will simply be puzzled and move on. And perhaps rightfully so as avant-garde doesn't even begin to categorize Tazartes as there are strands of world music, field recordings, folk stylings, and bold musique concrete running vivaciously through "Check Point Charlie." For outsider music, it's astounding how beautiful and full his compositions are, even if the combinations are almost always unexpected. On "Traces de Coups" La Monte Young-like vocal incantations hover and churn over a bed of drums, clicks, and keyboard stutters while a wild-eyed polka is pasted over a Casio beat on "La Mort de Berchou." There are literally hundreds of moments like this in "Check Point Charlie"'s four 15 minute tracks, each occupying a side of vinyl. As with all Tazartes recordings, there are secrets hidden deep in the fabric of the music, obscured and waiting for discovery by new, hungry, and uncompromising listeners. – Ryan Potts, Experimedia
Born in Paris in 1947, Ghedalia Tazartes started singing when he was twelve years old, creating his own language. He began a professional career in dance, theatre, and cinema while still giving some occasional concerts and publishing a few albums, each one of them an acclaimed masterpiece. Recorded in 1989 and originally released by Aaya in 1990, Check Point Charlie is the first work by Tazartes conceived for the compact disc format and its different time boundaries. The result is a 60 minute long collection of layered field recordings combined into a polyphonic ceremony filled by his typical multi-tracked vocals, between a gibberish scream and the muezzin's call to prayer. A unique record that -- after almost 25 years -- is finally enjoyable with the depth of sound that only a vinyl release can give.
